The frontier system of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the number one supercomputer on the HPL-AI list, thanks to the 6.86 Xflops of HPL-AI performance. Under the hood, the front system of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is powered by AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct Accelerator.

AMD EPYC and AMD Instinct MI200-powered systems

According to a press release released by AMD, the new CSC’s LUMI supercomputer, AMD EPYC and AMD Instinct MI200 is powered by CPU and GPU and is the third most powerful supercomputer on the GPU Top 500 and Green 500 list, providing 152 peak computing throughput. Performance and power capacity of 51.63 gigaflops / watt.

Similarly, the Adastra system in GENCI-CINES is also powered by AMD and is the 10th most powerful supercomputer in the Top 500 list and the fourth most powerful supercomputer in the Green 500 list. These figures confirm that many modern supercomputers now use AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct Accelerator.

2022 Top 500 Report Insights

According to the latest reports, AMD powers two of the three fastest supercomputers, and half of the world’s supercomputers rely on AMD computing units. The top 500 report includes a total of 94 AMD systems, indicating a 95 percent increase per year. Similarly, more than 38 new supercomputers in the top 500 list are based on AMD processors.

Finally, AMD powers the world’s four most powerful supercomputers. According to these statistics, more and more supercomputers are opting for AMD computing components and the company is also gaining a lot of traction in the consumer segment.

AMD recently announced Ryzen 6000 series CPUs based on Zen4 architecture and these new CPUs come with higher clock speed, higher cache memory and better power efficiency. Ryzen 6000 series CPUs will be available by the end of 2022 along with a new set of motherboards supported by DDR5 RAM and PCIe Gen 5 technology.
