Tesla Megapack battery fire prompts shelter-in-place warning in California

A Tesla Megapack battery caught fire this morning at local utility company PG&E’s Elkhorn battery storage facility in Monterey County, California, local news stations KSBW Action News 8 and KRON4 reported.

Now the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, North County Fire Protection District and Pacific Gas & Electric are providing a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby areas, along with an interactive map showing which areas are affected and road closures. Residents are asked to close all windows and turn off ventilation systems due to an ongoing hazardous waste incident caused by a Tesla Megapack fire.

According to Jeff Smith, PG&E’s operations cum manager, the fire started around 1:30AM this morning.
