Filing of Income Tax Return (ITR) has now become a more streamlined process as taxpayers can easily log on to the Income Tax Department website from anywhere. As the ITR filing date (July 31) for the financial year 2021-2022 is approaching, taxpayers are advised to file their ITR before the last date. Here is a step-by-step guide to e-file your income tax returns for those who are new to the process and looking to file their ITR from their computers.
It should be noted that taxpayer can file ITR 1 and ITR 4 online. ITR-1 is Rs. Persons earning up to Rs. 50 lakhs onwards: Salary/pension, a house property (except in cases of loss from previous years), income from other sources (except lottery winnings and income from race horses) and spouse or minor included in case of clubbed income tax returns.
ITR-4 is filed if an individual is eligible to declare profits and gains from business and profession on presumptive basis under section 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE. Taxpayers can enter and submit the relevant data directly online in the e-filing portal.
How to e-file your income tax returns online
Click on e-file Then the menu Income Tax Return Link.
Next, you will see the income tax return page where your PAN number will be automatically filled.
On this page you have to choose Assessment Year, ITR Form Number, Filing Type such as Original/Revised Returnand finally, Submission mode such as Prepare and submit online Before clicking Finally continue.
You will then be greeted by a page with a set of instructions and various fields. Fill all applicable and mandatory fields. Taxpayers are advised to keep clicking Save what is written To avoid periodic loss / session timeout. Taxpayers can access the draft up to 30 days from the date of saving.
in Taxes paid and verification tab, taxpayers must select the appropriate verification option from among the three options. You can do either Select e-verification Choose quickly, or E-verify within 120 days from the date of filingor send Signed ITR-V through regular or speed post within 120 days from the date of filing.
Click on Preview and submit Press the button to verify all the data entered and then press submit.
Notes: If you have opted for e-verification, you can use four options to verify the ITR:
- EVC generated through Bank ATM or Generate EVC option under My Account
- Aadhaar OTP
- A valid bank account first
- Prevalidated Demat Account
Note that if you have selected the other two options, the e-filing process will not be complete until you verify the ITR. To review the uploaded ITRs, individuals can visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
