Amazon is tightening its ebook return policy to curb booktalk

According to the Authors Guild, Amazon plans to limit automatic ebook returns to cases where people haven’t read more than 10 percent of the book. The change is expected to take place by the end of this year following complaints that Kindle buyers are returning fully read titles to receive refunds.

The Authors Guild said the deal was reached after discussions with Amazon executives. Individual authors raised concerns about the increase in returns earlier this year, saying Amazon would bill them for any royalties they earned from the books. Some have pinned the rise of the practice on video platform TikTok’s book community, and in a press release, the guild blamed “BookTalk influencers” for encouraging people to get “free” books…
